Why You Should Keep Going to the Gym During the Summer
When summer arrives, it is tempting to replace your gym workouts with walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities. Getting outside is wonderful for your physical and mental health—but outdoor movement does not always provide the same benefits as a structured strength-training workout.
The best summer fitness plan does not require choosing between the gym and the outdoors. You can enjoy both.
Walking Is Great—but Strength Training Still Matters
Walking is excellent for cardiovascular health, stress relief and staying active. However, it does not provide enough resistance to maintain and build strength throughout your entire body.
Regular strength training helps you:
Maintain & increase muscle mass and physical strength
Support bone health
Improve balance, posture and mobility
Protect your joints
Make everyday activities feel easier
Stay strong and independent as you age
Even two or three focused strength workouts each week can help you preserve the progress you have already made. Enjoy your summer walks—but continue challenging your muscles too.

Maintaining Your Routine Makes It Easier to Stay Consistent
Summer schedules can quickly fill up with vacations, patios, cottages and social events. While it is perfectly normal for your routine to change, stopping altogether can make returning to the gym in September feel much harder.
Your summer workouts do not have to be long or complicated. A consistent 30- to 45-minute workout is far better than waiting for the “perfect” time to exercise.
Keeping a basic routine helps fitness remain part of your life throughout the year—not something you repeatedly stop and restart.
A Morning Workout Can Set Up Your Entire Day
Starting your day with movement can create a sense of accomplishment before the day becomes busy. A gym workout can help you feel more alert, focused and ready to handle everything ahead.
Morning workouts can also be easier to maintain during the summer because they allow you to exercise before work, social plans or the hottest part of the day. Once your workout is finished, you can enjoy the rest of your day knowing that you have already done something positive for yourself.
Exercise Can Give Your Mood a Boost
Exercise is not only about changing how your body looks. Movement can help reduce stress, improve your energy and give your mood a natural lift.
A structured gym workout also provides something that can be difficult to find during a busy summer: dedicated time for yourself. It is an opportunity to put down your phone, focus on your body and leave feeling stronger than when you arrived.
The Gym Gives You a Comfortable Place to Train
Toronto summers can be hot, humid and unpredictable. Exercising inside gives you a cool, comfortable environment where you can follow your workout without worrying about extreme heat, rain or poor air quality.
You also have access to equipment that allows you to train every major muscle group safely and gradually increase the challenge as you become stronger.
Create a Balanced Summer Fitness Plan
You do not have to spend your whole summer indoors. Combine strength training at the gym with the outdoor activities you enjoy.
A simple week might include:
Two or three gym-based strength workouts
Several outdoor walks
One yoga, Pilates or mobility session
Time for rest, relaxation and summer fun
For Many
The goal is not perfection. It is maintaining enough consistency to keep feeling strong, energetic and confident.
Summer is a time to enjoy yourself—but taking care of your health should still be part of that enjoyment. Keep walking outside, soak up the sunshine and continue making time for strength training.
