As children we used to get off a bus and walk about 1 km to my Grandma’s house after school. I remember the wind and the deep skin chill from that walk.
We were close to a lake and it was freezing and blustery from all the lake effect snow. We would be so frozen that we couldn’t wait for the warmth of her kitchen.
She often had chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven soft & gooey. I also recall the amazing smell of soup stock simmering on the stove.
My Grandma always had bone broth ready just in case someone was coming down with a cold.
She would make the broth from turkey or chicken bones & create a hearty soup with homemade noodles & veggies.
Well, she knew what she was doing
So simple & inexpensive to make bone broth is filled with immune boosting stuff!
Why use bone broth?
To create beautiful skin, nails & hair
To help improve immunity.
To decrease inflammation
To help with osteoarthritis & joint issues
Skin: it helps us look younger by keeping our skin radiant and elasticized. You need the collagen part of the bone broth for this
WHY USE BONE BROTH FOR YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM :
RESPIRATORY BENEFITS> Bone broth contains something called "Cysteine" that can decrease the mucus in the lungs & help reduce respiratory discomfort. (This is what my Grandma used it for although I am not sure if she knew that it was an amino that did the work)
There are other amino acids in the broth that can help your immune system function well & be able to attack those nasty pathogens. Again, these come from the thicker part of the broth
JOINT & BONEHEALTH> Bone broth can reduce joint pain and inflammation. It contains glucosamine which stimulates the growth of new collagen. It has also been known to help prevent Osteoarthrits and to protect the joints from stress and damage.
GUT> The gelatin like substance in the broth helps protect the mucosal lining in the digestive track so you can alleviate some discomfort from eating certain foods.
To get the most out of it place the bones along with fatty looking parts and ligaments and tendons. Ok that sounds gross but what happens is that there is collagen in these. Its not actually all fat. So, keep the good stuff in your pot. Be sure to boil the soup with vegetables and onions and herbs.
You can simply drink the broth
Or you can add the broth to soups, stews, gravies, or pour onto meats when serving.
You can also add extra spices like turmeric that contains curcumin which is a strong anti-inflammatory. Other spices like ginger, garlic, cinnamon & black pepper can be added to soup to help increase the anti inflammatory benefits
